Took a trip to the fabric warehouse so the girl could find material to make me a jacket.

The girl thought the warehouse is owned by mobsters. Just in case, we left Lucy in the car.

Except for a few high priced materials, customer cut their own fabric.

There were customer in the warehouse but I tried not to include them in any pictures. I don't want anyone getting mad at me.

Isle 15 is where we found wool for my jacket. I image the value of all the material in here could be a million.

Twin Cities Marathon Registration is Open

The marathon folks began taking registrations earlier this week, but for whatever reason I couldn't get myself to sign up before today. I ran the race every year since 1996, except for 2001 when I ran Chicago with my dad instead. The redheaded one said that maybe I waited to sign up because I don't like to spend money. She could be on to something as the race costs $100 and the website includes an additional $6.25 for transaction costs.

I would be crazy not to run our hometown marathon. It really is one of the best in the nation.

Marathon Law Broken

If you know me then you know that I will break established marathon running and training advise.

Here is a picture of me finishing the Sioux City race. Notice the pretty red shoes I was wearing. I purchased those the Wednesday before the Saturday race. After the Twin Cities Marathon I realized that my racing shoes were shot. I went to the running shoe store to purchase a new pair of Thorlos running socks.

I find the medium cushion socks keep my feet dry, protected and comfortable. I highly recommend them. They are the World Best Footwear. Also, they are made in the USA!

After finding my socks, I noticed the new lightweight running shoes and figured I could get them and decide later whether or not I would wear them for the race. The established marathon advice is to not wear anything footwear that you haven't used during a long run. This is to avoid getting blisters. Well, the shoes felt great on a couple of short runs so I decided to wear them. I was glad that I did. The Sioux City marathon is run on a lot of concrete running/walking paths. The extra cushion felt great, especially during the last 10k.

For as well as the Twin Cities Marathon had gone, it was difficult for me to end the running season after the last 10k of that race. Even though I kept myself from walking, I was passed by a lot of runners toward the end. I didn't have enough endurance to even try to pickup my pace during the last mile or even half mile.

I was fairly sure that I would run Sioux City on Monday, but I didn't sign up on-line until Wednesday. I am so glad that I did. It was a great trip.

We left for Sioux City on Friday after lunch. This year we took the interstate the entire way. This meant going to Sioux Falls and then south. We checked into our hotel, picked up my race packet and ordered take out from a local restaurant.

It was a nice morning to run. At the start we had sunny skies.

The sunny skies turned into overcast skies about an hour into the run. By then the race leaders had long disappeared from my sight. I was alone running on the trials of South Sioux City. I was in fifth place. At mile 13, the redheaded meow meow and Lucy were there waiting for me. My split was 1:21:43. The runner in front of me was at 1:17:26.

I started to feel good around mile 16 after the first steep hill in Stone State Park. The marathon route is very beautiful. Unlike Twin Cities I enjoyed the last 10k. I finished very strong, in fact I ran faster the last 10k faster this year that I did in 2007 when I won the race. I finished in third place at 2:45:33 after a runner dropped out and I passed the third place runner around mile 24. Results are here.

Ten things that I am waiting for...

1. 9 years from now so that I can go watch Drum Corps World Championship not in the Indy Dome.
2. Next summer's drum corps season.
3. New windows from the MAC.
4. Economic development. It is a bummer for so many people to be out of work.
5. A different President.

6. Motivation to train properly for the marathon. Until then I will just do what I can do.

7. My next plate of pancakes!

8. Poker night with the guys.

9. Retirement so that I can volunteer full time with a drum corps during the summer.

10. When I have my own bed and breakfast or motel.

Texas Vacation

We spent four days around Dallas/Fort Worth Texas. It was a spur of the moment trip. We flew Delta/NWA on Thursday morning. The flight went well. I had developed a bad cold earlier in the week, but I was determined to make a go of it.

Here is the car we rented from Enterprise. It was cheap. What I like about Enterprise is that they don't do the hard sell on options like Budget does. This car was $112 for four days, which included all the taxes.

Our friend TL took us in for the weekend. We hope that TL is able to come up to Minnesota in August. I think we would have a blast going fishing (my renewed hobby), to Canterbury Park, or to the Renaissance festival with the hound dog. Here TL gets ready to check out Drum Corps.

It was super hot on Thursday (105) but better on Friday for the second Drum Corps show. Here the Boston Crusaders getting ready to perform.

I didn't take many pictures over the weekend. I was just too busy sneezing and blowing my nose.

Our flight out was Sunday morning traveling on American Airlines. We were aboard the plane when due to a maintenance issue the flight was cancelled. We ened up flying out around 10 pm instead. We arrived home very tired. It was fun regardless.

I use the internet to find businesses and people. I find it frustrating to recycle brand new phone books delivered to me without my consent. Any delivered to me go straight in my recycling bin. I realize that multiple companies deliver these useless books, but at least one can opt out of one of the worst, Dex. Here is step by step instruction as to how:

Select "Proceed to Select Your Dex".

Exploring the Midwest in Search of Drum Corps Part 2

Our next pit stop was at this Mobil station somewhere between Galena and Rockford.

We arrived in Rockford by 3 pm. Since it looked like rain we decided to leave Lucy at the hotel and watch Phantom Regiment practice. It was a good idea because it was the only marching we would see that day. The show in the evening was rained out. There was over four inches of rain. Here is a picture of the water draining 30 minutes after the storm.

The next day it was hot. We had a long drive in front of us from Rockford to Stillwater. Regardless, we stopped in the Wisconsin Dells for ice cream.

We made it home in time to drop off the hound and get to Stillwater for the night's show. Here are the Cavaliers waiting to begin.

Exploring the Midwest in Search of Drum Corps Excitement

Last Thursday we took off for our first Drum and Bugle Corps trip of the season. We left Minneapolis planning on driving to Dubuque IA and then Friday on to Rockford, IL for the first DCI show of the year.

We took highway 52 to Rochester. We all wanted to stop, but I had a problem finding a gas station. We finally found a small BP were we could go potty and get a pea snack.

Within another hour or so we arrived in La Crosse, WI. There we enjoyed Grandad Bluff which is a nice park on top of a steep hill overlooking town.

Lucy, the hound queen, enjoyed seeing her territory from high above.

We continued south along the Mississippi river to Prairie du Chien, WI. It is such a beatiful route. I wish that we would have stopped to take pictures. It is amazing. In town we stopped and played at a visitor center.

We made it to Dubuque early enough to go on a dog walk, eat at a Mexican resturant and stop at the Diamond Joe Casino. I played Blackjack and lost. I had fun. The casino was very nice. It is in an actual building and no longer on the riverboat. It was super clean and new looking inside and out. Afterwords, we drove around town down for a bit.

The morning greeted us with rain and thunder. Everything cleared out by about 10 am, but it was very humid.

Our plan was to drive to Galena, IL to check that historical town out. We enjoyed it.

It was hot so Lucy got tired.

Madison Marathon Recap

We left for Madison Saturday morning at 8:30. I'm notorious for not being ready when I say I'm going to be, but this time was different.

We had a lot of gear for a two day trip. Lucy had her crate she sleeps in while at home or at a hotel. She also had her sleeping pads, treats and toys. I had three bags. One bag for racing gear which includes my racing shoes, GPS watch and shorts and top. Another bag for my normal clothes and toiletry items. And a third bag for my computer and camera equipment. New this year was a cooler which I had stocked with bagels, soda, Gatorade and Red Bull (for the girl).

We took the Cobalt because the A/C in the girl's Subaru isn't working. Lucy was fine the in back seat. She slept almost the entire drive time. Here she is trying to stay awake at a rest stop 40 minutes north of Madison.

We arrived in Madison early in the afternoon. We drove directly to the marathon expo to pick up my race bib. All events were held at the Alliant Energy Center. The traffic and parking were a challenge. This was because in conjunction with the marathon is the World's Largest Bratfest; 191,712 brats eaten in 2008. Here is a picture of the parking situation upon arrival.

The morning of the race was cool and foggy. Traffic and parking were again challenging. There were about 7,300 participants in either the marathon, half marathon, quarter marathon or relay races. The marathon had a little bit more than 1,500 finishers. All races started and finished in the Alliant Energy Center parking lots. The good thing for marathon runners was that we had our own start line separate from the half marathon runners. I wouldn't have been too happy to negotiate my way through that swarm of people. Bratfest was all quite at that time. Here are two pictures I took on my warm up walk.

Here is a good newspaper article about the actual race. I ran well and placed third at 2:42:07. It wasn't easy...it never is but this race was unique. I was running by myself most of the race. I worried a lot about getting lost. Here are a couple of my reflections/observations (some good some bad) about the race:

Not enough port-a-johns at the start (no race can ever have enough but they need more).
Plenty of energy gel was available on the course. I use two per marathon...around miles 9 and 19.
My fastest time in over three years. Maybe I can break under 2:40 again.
Basset Hounds should be allowed onto Willow Island to join the Bratfest!
Red Roof Inn rocks...plenty of room for Lucy.
More food is needed at the finish. I received a bottle of water, chocolate milk, cheese and I a turned down a handful of pretzels. How about a brat and beer?
3,195 calories burned.
I was not passed during the entire race. I passed a runner at mile 24.5 to take third.
Beautiful scenery, great weather and nice people.

I updated my marathon history today. I have run 27 Marathons (Ten States) All Under Three Hours! I have come to the conclusion that I will continue to run under three hours until I don't run under three anymore. Or in other words, I won't see my over three hour marathon coming, it will just happen.

I noticed a link to the National Running Day on the TC Marathon website. This is the first year. The national website is Runningday.org

Hound Report from Lucy's Biological Mother

Hi Patty, Thanks for the pictures I am glad to see that my dogs are not the only ones that climb onto thing not meant for them!!!!! I am sad to hear that there is alot of loose stool. Did she every try I/D or low residue food? And some dogs can be on low dose metronidazole when things flair up. We also use Tylan when stools need some help getting rid of over growth of clostridium. Also we use a food additive supplement of Fortiflora, it helps build good bacteria in the gut. I'm guessing you have tried these without much success. Maybe as she settles down with age, so will her guts. We just had a visit from Lucy's brother Radar. He is very much the size of his mom, very fine and only about 35 lbs. sure does have her eyes. Lucy has the pretty eyes with eye liner. Sounds like a few pounds lighter is a good thing. I know it is very hard to keep a good figure on them. Scott always overfeeds food and treats. Turbo did find a great home with two little boys ages 1 & 3. They love him alot, not so much the shedding!! Our kids just finished their spring shed, lots and lots of combing and cleaning the floor!! Well I am glad to hear from you and hear how Lucy is doing. I did get up dates on Joan and Donny. They also have melded into the family like they have been there forever. I do hope the the skin tag just falls off! I guess I better scoot the Kaidyn (grandbaby) is waiting for lunch. Thanks again for pictures and lettng me know how you are doing! Linus has gone to a new home, that was a hard dicission to make!!! But she has 2 females she will be using for breeding and fell in love with him, I had to think long and hard. She actually was my doctor (took me a while to put 2 and 2 togather) I know she will give him a great home and I can go visit any time they live close by. I am awaiting to hear about the new litter. I saw this on the hound walk this morning.

It looks like a tree limb was cut away from the powerline. A not so small piece remains.

On other news, Lucy got nipped by a Dotson earlier this week. No damage was done. The neighbor is nice, but his dogs have always growled at Lucy. She meet them again this morning. He is a brief clip. (Edit: I have since been told the correct name of the breed is Dachshund.)

Finally, I skimmed Warren Buffett's annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. The letter is available here. The letter was released to the public this morning. Here is the first media article about it. I highly suggest that you read the full letter yourself.

My biggest take aways are that...

"Clinging to cash equivalents or long-term government bonds at present yields is almost certainly a terrible policy if continued for long."

"Improved “transparency” – a favorite remedy of politicians, commentators and financial regulators foraverting future train wrecks – won’t cure the problems that derivatives pose."

I am confident in Warren Buffett...not so confident with our current government.

Iowa Electronic Market - Legalized Internet Gambling

The Iowa Electronic Markets are operated by the University of Iowa. The markets are small-scale, real-money futures markets where contract payoffs depend on economic and political events such as elections.

I began "betting" on the future federal funds target rate January 2005. One is allowed to buy in at $500 increments. I bought in at $250. Now I have only about $50 left. I lost about $50 on Hillary Clinton in 2008. Before that I lost a lot thinking that the fed would stop raising rates in 2006. It turns out now that they probably shouldn't have raised rates so high.

I haven't been real active in the this past year, but I'm determined to win my money back or loose it all and then retire. Here is what I have learned.

1 - Never bet on the long shots. This includes anything priced at 10 cents or less. Everyone wants to be the person who pays 5 cents to win a dollar. These long shots never come work out.
2 - Money is made by buying in once the market has discounted the remote possibilities. This means that money is made slowly over time.
3 - Don't let your emotions affect your bet. One is betting what the federal reserve is going to do, not what they should do.
4 - Have fun. I enjoyed trying to make a profit and I learned a little.

There should be more posting this month. Dan's purchased a new batch of rechargeable batteries. Since it is warmer outside now, Dan should be able to capture more of Lucy's adventures. It has been almost impossible to manage thick gloves, poop bags and a camera on the walks.

While I was getting dressed I noticed Lucy's bone strategically placed next to my closet.

I recall from spy movies that disguises and distraction don't need to be perfect. They may only need to fool someone for a second. With that in mind, I can't think of a better place to hide a bone than out in the open where no one is looking for it. Good job Lucy.

By the way, a fourth Jason Bourne movie is being planned for release sometime in 2010. You can read more about this here. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I have many "animal friends" at home. We have names for them all including Bear, Leo, Baby Bear, Panda Bear, Super Dan, Christmas Dalmation, Toy Store Guy, Buzz and now Christmas Hound.

My brother Ken was quick to say that I didn't "win" the animal. The redheaded meow meow fears that Lucy may be jealous.

The following is my Christmas present list for Santa Claus.

(1) Seville Commercial Work Bench - I saw this bench at Sam's Club and immediately wanted it. It appeared to be very well put together. It is too heavy for me transport in my car. I'm thinking of ordering on-line instead.

(2) Winter Boots - I don't have any picked out yet. I need a warm pair of boots to wear to the dog park. The dog park is the coldest place on earth.

(3) Bargain Hound® Wire Crate - Ok so maybe this isn't something I need but if Lucy had fingers instead of paws she would have her own list. Her current crate is great, but she is outgrowing it.

(4) Taco Bell Big Box Meal - Yummy!

(5) T-shirt, dress socks and underwear - My undershirts are yellow, my socks have holes in them and my underwear...actually I have enough underwear. I need t-shirt and socks.

(6) Games - Anything related to poker!

(7) Mittins - Again...the dog park is so cold.

Trip to the Dog Park

We went to the Airport dog park this evening. The airport dog park is on an 80-acre parcel of land owned by the Metropolitan Airport Commission and situated in the northwest corner of the airport property. The park has a website at airportdogpark.com. Lucy goes to this park four or five days a week.

Here Lucy ventures into a patch of trees and bushes. We attach a second lighted collar to her so that we don't loose her in the darkness.

Here Lucy plays with another dog also named Lucy. At night there are only a few dogs present, but during the day there can be a couple dozen dogs.

There are a lot of nice people at the park. Here someone has left a bunch of tennis balls for dog to play with. We usually bring our own ball, but Lucy is more interested in playing chase or wrestling games with dogs than ball with humans.

The park is one of three dog parks that we visit. This park is conveniently located to our home. I am thankful that this doggy park is available.

Puppy Update from Redheaded Meow Meow

The puppy went to the vet to see how much she weighs. She is a 34.2 pound hound. Also, we were trying to decide if she’s fat. Even the vet tech wasn’t sure, because when she’s standing up, she has a waistline like she’s supposed to, but then she sits down and looks like a big fat bratwurst. Ultimately, they think she’s perfect, and is just growing into her basset hound barrel chest build. They were laughing over how much extra skin she has.

My trip to SuperTarget Last Night

After working hard to get everything on my shopping list I stopped in the bakery section for a treat. You can image my disappointment when seeing this.

Yes, they were out of donuts and rolls...but to make matters worst check this out.

Oh no! The horror. I couldn't sleep last night. I tossed and turned all night hearing the crying donuts.

Stearns Bank, National Association (Saint Cloud, MN) Acquires the Insured Deposits of Alpha Bank & Trust, Alpharetta, GA

I'm surprised that:

(1) A relatively small bank in MN is going to acquire this.
(2) The cost to the FDIC Insurance fund is so high - 158 Million.
(3) There aren't more smaller banks failing.

I think that 2 or 3 may indicate that the FDIC is way behind in closing banks. They are closing the worst one first which is why the cost to the fund is so high.

Siouxland Lewis & Clark Marathon - Fourth Place

This morning was the Siouxland Lewis & Clark Marathon in Sioux City, Iowa. The results are here.

I won last year, but this year I didn't do much summer training. I raced well for the first twenty miles. I started at 6:00 per mile pace and almost immediate found myself in fourth place. I was determined to keep the third place runner in sight and for the most part I was able to do that. On top of the steep hill in Stone State Park I saw the second place runner who was now running in third. I learned afterwords from Patty that apparently he took a wrong turn and was passed by the other runner. I thought I would have a good chance to pass him too. Unfortunately, at mile twenty I hit the 'marathon wall'.

Almost with out warning, I was hardly able to keep moving. Up until this point, the doubt of not finishing wasn't even on my mind. Now I was in full marathon shuffle mode. I was able to shuffle in the rest of the way. Fourth Place 2:50.

Hello from post race party headquarters.

It rained before the race and started again after a few miles. At around 10 miles the downpour began and continued through mile 14. It was a cold rain. My socks became totally saturated with water and became useless. I contemplated stopping to take them off, but I didn't think I had the dexterity in my fingers to retie my shoes. The weather improved for the last 6.2 miles.

Lucy and Patty cheered me on from mile 9 and 25. Lucy was shivering from cold so I gave her my finishing blanket. The blanket helped.

I finished in 2:45 which is better than I though I could do.

"I have nothing to blog about today" I told this to redheaded meow meow. She suggested that I provide another post about the most popular hound in Minneapolis, Lucy. I said no. Besides not being on speaking terms with the hound since she did #1 on the floor twice today I really don't want to completely turn this blog over to Lucy. I'd call Lucy's potty breaks as accidents except that I'm not sure they were. She is testing my resolve.

I bet that there will be much water cooler talk about Saturday Night Live's skit on Sarah Palin. I don't find their humor funny. I know that others do. I find their humor mean spirited. She didn't create the mess we call the US Government. When I say mess, I mean social security, the federal deficit, and a complex tax system to name a few problems. I think I like Sarah because other people hate her so much.

Anyhow, this week should be fun. It is my birthday this week and the marathon is on Sunday. My race number is 841. See you out there.

Tips for watching the Twin Cities Marathon

Are you planning on watching the Twin Cities Marathon? Let me help you. First here is the official Twin Cities Marathon - Spectator Guide. I picked up a hard copy at my neighborhood Caribou Coffee.

Dan's Tips for Watching the Twin Cities Marathon:

Stay within the Circle. If you plan on watching the race from more than one spot on the course, then you need to plan your escape(s) to your secondary locations. Generally, park your vehicle east of the course.
Stand on the upside of hills. Not on the downside. Runners will be moving slower so you will have a better chance of seeing them and being able to yell to them.
Don't cheer from the the most popular viewing locations. This includes the east side of Lake Calhoun as well as major intersections. Runners will not be able to pick you out from the crowd and you won't be able to see them through the person standing in front of you.
Don't tell runners that they are almost there, until they are really almost there! I would save that cheer for the last mile of the race.
Take your dog and or puppy with you to watch the race.
Bring extra clothing. October mornings can be cooler than you think.
Practice taking action photographs ahead of time and be ready to shot when the runners go by. My mother found this out the hard way and was only able to get photos of me from behind.
Some runners write their names with black marker on their arms. Call them out by name. It really helps lift their spirits.
Don't expect to be able to see you runner friends right after they finish. They need to rest, pick up their warm up clothes, grab refreshments and change their clothes.

Best Laid Plans

One of the difficulties (at least for me) with planning on running a lot of marathons is that I have a tendency to not follow through with the training. I guess what I am saying is that I neglected my summer running. My longest run of the summer was 16 miles and I only did that last week. I hope to log two 10 mile runs this week and take it easy the rest of the days as well as next week. Because I have successfully finished 24 marathons in the past, I am confident and actually looking forward to this year's run. Of course, I am disappointed that I didn't do the work.

I will still try to finish within 3 hours to add to my streak of under 3 hour marathons. I will need good weather and a bit of luck to accomplish this. We will just see.

Sad day for the Escort

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that the Ford Escort has retired to the large parking lot in the sky. Here is a picture of me with her today.

I purchased her in April of 1996. She was a very good car. Here is a list of some of the more memorable events with her.

* Travels to Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin for many drum and bugle corps shows.
* Driving back from a Drum Corps show in Charles City Iowa. The show was actually rained out. We were on Iowa back roads driving at night listening to the Tyson/Holyfield fight. This was the fight were Mike Tyson bite off a piece of Holyfield ear off. It was interesting listening to the fight live.
*Escort had driven to multiple marathons including the Chicago marathon with my brother Ken. It was the first marathon that I ran two weeks after Twin Cities. I was in great shape, but wasn't sure if I could run back to back races like that.
* I slept in Escort the night before my first and only time running Grandma's Marathon in Duluth. Hotels before the race are expensive and at the time I didn't have much money so I slept in the car at the wayside rest. It was cold outside, but I had blankets and the night went by fast. It really wasn't a big deal because the race starts so early that one needs to be up by 5 am anyhow. I had a nice race. I also slept in Escort before a couple Dam to Dam races in Des Moines.
*During the last year, the Redheaded Meow Meow has driven Escort. The car has helped transport Lucy (the best hound in the world) as well as lots of flowers and landscaping materials too heavy and dirty for the Cobalt.

Thank you Ford Escort. You will be missed.

I'm not sure what exactly what we are looking at here. There is a runner. He is not me, although he looks like me. I see some color in the tree leaves.

Here is Lucy. I suspect that her mother is trying to get her to walk and she is not cooperating. There may be a stick, leaf, person or smell distracting her.

Lucy is now 14 weeks old. At 12 weeks she had a fully developed brain. She has a bright future as a Credit Derivative Swap Specialist.

Within a quarter of a mile from the house, is Holiday Stationstore #25. The store is clean, well stocked and the employees are nice and helpful. It is a excellent place to grab a snack on the way to work or as a pit stop while walking the dog. The store is located on Nicollet avenue and Diamond Lake Road.

I purchased a powerball ticket in there for tonight's drawing. I don't play powerball much. I used to contribute with co-workers to play. I don't play with them anymore. I guess when they win, I'll be the only one at work the next day. I stopped because we never won anything. Also, I like to pick my own numbers. My numbers for tonight's drawing are as follows:

I'm in a bad mood today. The little things in life seem to drive me crazy. Take for instance, the name on this building "Hennepin County Family Justice Center".

What does that mean? I can figure out that it is Divorce Court... or is that wrong? Is Divorce a dirty word now? The Republican/Libertarian in me thinks that the government isn't very good at finding justice. Isn't it a sign of the times, that a this one county in MN needs a huge building for Divorce Mediation or whatever they do in there.

I'm going to go home and sleep this mood off. Either that or someone give me another picture of our puppy rolling around on the sidewalk.

Traffic in Minneapolis

Traffic in Minneapolis has been getting worse lately. Here are two pictures I took on my way out of downtown today. I could have taken a lot more if I had taken the time.

One of the biggest problems we have is with cars blocking intersections.

I live close to work. I'm so glad I don't have to be on the road for an hour or more every day.

We continued on the parkway and stopped at Lucy's first garage sale. I looked at a Jesus Ventura action figure, but I purchased a garbage can for the garage for $1. Lucy meet a new friend and then we arrived back home in time for me to continue painting.

Puppy and I have been having so much fun! after you left, she finished her breakfast and then slept for a while, then she got up and played, and played and played. then we went for a walk to holiday. I made a basset hound lure! I took the pvc tube in the basement that's sawed in half and put the chicken cheese whiz in one end. we had a pretty good walk. she crashed near the end. she met lots of people at holiday. one lady told me we should see about having her be a dog model!! when we got home, she went to sleep on the bathmat.

She woke up from her SUPER NAP and we went outside for about 10 minutes of playing. she met the postman, who, it turns out, carries puppy treats with him. apparently, it's against the regulations, but I think it's very smart for a postman to have puppy treats! we came inside and played on the floor of the kitchen for a while. she had lots of water and a little food. she's not eating enough kibble, but I've also been giving her lots and lots of liver treats today, so she might be fine. she fell asleep again. she was yodeling a little. she really yodels inside. it's sort of weird!

So after you left, Lucy and I went to make the bed and she had her first accident! #1. I didn't think she needed to go -she'd just gone! tricky hound! she got put in her crate for about 10minutes while I cleaned up and made the bed (HOLY HOWLING HOUND!!) and then we did some work on learning to pay attention with treat bribes. Then we went BACK out for a walk. She likes to just sit down and not move, but after our treat work, I could get her going by showing her a treat. We made it ALL the way up Wentworth to diamond lake road, and then turned right. Across the street from holiday she sort of lost steam. sat down and started doing her howling thing. I think she was really tired and sort of freaked out by all the cars. So she got carried to the coffee shop. They gave her a treat and she spit it out in my hand!! Then we partly walked home. I ended up carrying her from by ava and the dog and those peoples' house. She was sleeping. Then we came in and she had a drink and then sort of made it across the living room. she'd flop and whine and stare at me (I'm sitting on the sofa closer to the AC) and then get up and walk a foot and flop and stare and whine. She finally made it to my foot and whined a little but now is totally conked out. she has her chin resting on my foot! Wait! She just got up and went to her bed!

What a nice hound she is.

The new house number and mail box are back on the house. We purchased two set and used the brighter set only to find out they were still too dark. We took them down and spray painted them silver. They turned out perfect.

I painted around the door before the rains came through today (before we are done, the door will be painted red). Redheaded Meow Meow and I spent the rest of the day shopping.

The house numbers pictured above were purchased from Home Depot. They had a very limited selection. I've concluded that Home Depot carries limited selections, has higher prices and inferior products than other stores. Anyhow, during our travel today we stopped at a Lowe's on Robert Street in Saint Paul. We found new numbers that are a bit larger than these that will tell our neighbors that we are bold, rich and arrogant and they better get used to it. Just kidding.

I was satisfied with the garden areas, but my Redheaded Meow Meow thought we could do better. She was right. She created Garden 2.

Here is Garden 2 from another angle.

Since the garden creation has gone well, she is in the process of creating Garden 3 toward the front of the house. I think it will connect the front, side and back of the yard together nicely.

We will also use this opportunity to decorate or hide the base of the this pole. Normally, a downspout is attached. I removed it to paint around it and haven't gotten around to putting it back up.

Here is a picture of my carpet cleaning machine that I sold using Craig's list. I don't have any carpet in the new house. Anyhow, Craig's list was easy and free. I didn't think that I would get a response, but I had it sold within four days. A lady contacted me and arranged to have her husband pick it up. The transaction when smoothly. I didn't even need to show my gun. I'm going to use the $$ to buy my girlfriend a night on the town.

Our flag is flying this 4th of July weekend.

I spend most of the day priming and painting the exterier of the house outside the kitchen. There was peeling paint everywhere. The finish coat is the darker white paint around the light on the right. More painting in scheduled for tomorrow, weather permitting.

I talked to my mother today. Not the one that posted a reply to my blog. She and my father hadn't decided if they were going to run the annual Green Lake - Spicer, MN road race tomorrow. It is about 12 miles and is notorious for being hot and humid. I ran last year and it was the first time I had ever felt like I was going to pass out. Which is weird because I didn't even run that hard. Around four miles, I felt that I wasn't having a good day. The leaders had pulled away from me by then so I shut it down and just ran it in. I have had training runs much faster than I ran the second half of that race, but I still felt terrible. Oh well...I won't be making the trip over for that this year. Good luck mom and dad!

2008 Fargo Marathon

Hello all, yesterday was the Fargo Marathon. Although I didn't train much I ran 2:46. I had a fun. It was a beautiful day with plenty of sun and nice temperatures. The wind picked up a bit during the second half, but I would have slowed down anyhow.

Neither Wind, Rain or a Loose Shoelace Could Stop Dan from Running his 23rd Marathon Under Three Hours.

I finished in 2:46 minutes. If you followed my progress by the Runner Updates, the estimated finish times were not correct. I did not slow down the last two miles. In fact, those were two of my faster miles at close to 6 minutes per mile. It was cold throughout the race, but the second half of the race was fun.

It was very beautiful around the lake. The entire course gets a "A" in my book. There were a few hills, but very mild compared to Siouxland.

I was being paced by runners from Texas, which made the going easier. The runners seemed experienced as they ran even paces.

A cold rain came in about fifteen minutes before the start. I wore a garbage bag over my running clothes to keep dry. I discarded the bag right before the start. Once we got going, the rain seemed to end, although the roads were wet and slippery in spots.

For you beer lovers out there, there was free beer at the finish and also inside the American Airlines center. They had hot food there too but I enjoyed the chocolate chip cookies provided by Potbelly Sandwich Works.

Hey everyone, I arrived safe and sound in Texas for marathon weekend. I went for a three mile run this morning. It felt hot and humid, although it probably was only 70 degrees. I will be going over to the marathon expos in a few minutes to pick up my race number of 566. I will take pictures of everything. I'll be able to post again this evening about that. So until then, have a great Saturday.

New Training Shoes

Yes, I took this picture. They are my new running shoes.

My old shoes had done well, but with my lower leg pain I thought it would be a good idea to get fresh cushion material that new shoe provide.

I prefer adidas or asics running shoes. They seem to work well and are priced right.

My brief run in with winter

I took the following pictures last Saturday afternoon from northern Minnesota. The next day it was 62 and sunny in Minneapolis.

The Cobalt was like a little kid who had never seen snow before. Hopefully, she will make it through many winters.

This playground was closed for the season. That didn't stop me from using the swing after I took the picture.
